Get Your Doctorate Through a Distance Learning College

ByAndrew Bicknell

Earning an associate's or bachelor's degree online has been a popular way to get a college education for quite some time. Recently though many colleges, both online and those with traditional campuses, have begun to offer advanced master's and doctoral degrees through distance learning programs.

If you already have a master's degree and want to take that next and final step in academia then it makes a world of sense to strongly consider a distance learning PhD.

The first thing to look at when considering this step in your academic career is what is needed to accomplish it. A computer and reliable internet and the ability to use them efficiently are a must. If you are reading this chances are you are already pretty good at finding information on the internet. Other computer skills will come in handy too; a good word processor or office suite such as Open Office, which is free, is something that will be needed. Your computer and its peripherals, such as a printer, will be relied on heavily during this time.

The next step is to find a school that fits your needs and will help you meet your ultimate goal. Each school has its own way of doing things and their curriculum and teaching philosophies will mirror this. This can be an important consideration when evaluating your own personal learning style. The closer the fit the better your experience will be. It is also important to try and stay in the same program throughout because transferring to another college part way through can mean losing important credits that you may have to repeat.

There are two primary methods that distance learning PhD programs work. Again, your learning style will help you decide which works best for you.

The first is more of the traditional way of earning a degree. It uses existing course structures and teaching methods and adapts them to the online world. Most of the class work, assignments, and testing is done via the internet. You will also find a more structured class or course schedule when going this route and find that you may need to go to a local testing center for certain tests. There may also be a portion of the program that requires you to be on campus, normally as you approach graduation.

The other method is a more personalized approach where your professors and advisor work with you to create a degree path that fits your own goals. This method works well for professionals who are looking for a more specialized degree. It does mean working with a professor or professors who specialize in that area of study that will create a curriculum that fits those needs. This allows the student to theorize, learn and apply practical applications as they relate to their area in business and the workplace.

With today's busy lifestyle it is impractical for many people to attend a traditional on campus doctorate program. Fortunately many colleges and universities have come to understand this problem and have created distance learning PhD programs to help those who wish to advance their education to the highest level.
