Online High School - Beginner's Guide

With the ever-increasing niche subjects in schools, but even more pressing budget problems, high schools are resorting to a new method of learning: online schools. Most people think of distance learning as another form of home school, but the two could not be more different. Online schools are usually state sponsored and Department of Education approved. They charge minimal enrollment rates that are typically paid by the local public school system. The major difference: you only take a few classes online. For the others, one sits in a regular high school classroom.

Thus, online schooling has emerged as the oddball class alternative. Schools do not want to teach an entire class for only five students, but the students still want to take the class. If the Advanced Placement class I want is not available at my school I can apply to be in an online class. Class sizes are usually limited to only ten or fifteen students, but each class begins at a different time of the year to allow for conflicting local school schedules. After you are signed up and login on the virtual school webpage, it is time to start your class!

Welcome and First Weeks:

Your online teacher will contact you right after you sign up to take a class. He or she needs to establish some of the ways that your local school will help in your online learning process. You will need to find both a mentor at the local school and a place to work. Since the online classroom works just like a physical one, there must be both a place in your schedule to take the online class and a teacher to supervise your progress. Choosing to work in the school library is likely the best option; one of the librarians can serve as your mentor. There will also be a required textbook and your school may or may not have it in stock. The books used are usually different from ones at your local school, so try to get these ordered in advance.

Course Modules and Pace:

Different from most home school schedules or distance learning, your online class probably requires submittal of assignments and completion of coursework by certain dates. The course is broken up into modules or sections with several sub-sections in each module. Your teacher is responsible for helping to create the module content, so he or she is very knowledgeable about what you will be learning. Each week you will be responsible for several sub-sections. This means a few different things. First, you must read the applicable sections of your textbook and understand them thoroughly. The material covered in the book may or may not be different from that in the online modules. Next, you should read through the online module. Most modules are presented in a easy-to-read format with plenty of pictures and graphics, but are also concise enough to understand easily. After you feel you understand both of these texts, move to the activity portion of the module.

Activities are similar to class work exercises, just like the reading is basically lecturing. Some online teachers choose to provide recorded supplemental lessons that enhance the content or provide specific instructions and help on how to complete the activity. Unlike class work, you can work on this activity for as long as you like. Usually the student types up the activity and then uploads it onto the site.

The pace of the course is measured by activity submittals and is not related to the time you spend working on the reading or class work.

Quizzes and Tests:

My first online quiz was extremely nerve-racking, but it really is nothing to worry about. Consider this, you probably can take the quiz multiple times! However, there are no hints and no study guides. Quizzes can be taken whenever you want. The student chooses how much to study for a quiz and how many times he or she takes the quiz. Most quizzes are multiple-choice, allowing for instant grading and feedback. If you miss any questions the incorrect question is shown, but the correct answer is not displayed. That means you have a good shot of improving your grade when taking the quiz again since the questions are usually the same.

While you can choose when to take quizzes, your mentor supervises tests. He or she gets a list of test passwords and must watch while you take the test so that there is no cheating. The test can only be completed once and questions usually are a mix of multiple-choice and some short answer.

Communication:

Communicating effectively in a class that is entirely online is hard for many individuals. Your teacher may be in Tennessee and you live in Virginia.

As a student online, the Department of Education will provide you with an e-mail address. This address can be used to communicate with your teacher and other classroom students. It is best used for lengthy questions or those that occur outside school hours.

Every teacher also establishes office hours. During this time (usually 8AM to 4PM, Monday through Friday), you can call the teacher's house, send them a page, or meet online.

Paging is a simple instant messaging service that usually resides within the virtual program. Your teacher will respond to questions within a few minutes when contacted this way.

Meeting online using software like Elluminate is the best way to learn unfamiliar concepts. An online meeting is generally scheduled once per week and students can "drop in" to ask quick questions during that time. You could also request a special meeting for more complicated concepts. Online meetings generally allow students and teachers to speak to each other, share a screen for drawing or writing, type text in a chat box, and even answer multiple-choice questions.

Discussion boards are also available to share thoughts or ideas about your class with other students and receive suggestions on submitted assignments.

The last communication method is one way. Many teachers choose to supplement the online lessons with PowerPoint presentations, audio recordings, or screen captures recordings. This material is invaluable for test preparation or exam review.

Grades:

Grades are reported by numerical values only; it is up to your school district to convert the number into a letter grade. Most activities are essentially pass or fail (100 or 0). If you mess something small up in an activity, ask your teacher to make the applicable corrections for a grade improvement.

Each quiz that allows multiple attempts will either average the attempts together or take the highest grade of all attempts. Tests cannot be retaken unless you ask your teacher for a special exception.

There will also be some participation assignments like online meetings or discussion boards. All who participate get a 100.

Succeeding:

Online learning requires more discipline than traditional learning, but it can be much more rewarding. Try to get your work started far in advance. You are much more likely to forgo work on an online class because it can be done anytime than to skip a traditional class. This technique also allows more time to ask questions and get help.

The second suggestion is to ask questions. This may seem to be trite advice, but breezing through the online lesson is not enough to really comprehend the content. It is also a good idea to meet with your teacher after each quiz or test that you do not earn a good grade on to review what you missed.

Resources:

Ask your guidance counselor about the online learning program in your state or school district. He or she will be able to provide specific or targeted help. I would also recommend looking at some of the information on two of the most widely used virtual schools: Florida Virtual School ( http://www.flvs.net ) and Virtual Virginia ( http://www.virtualvirginia.org/ ).

Choosing the Best Nursing College

ByKaty V Kozusko

Those who are interested in the exciting and rapidly changing world of nursing and health care have their choice of a wide number of accredited nurse colleges to attend. Nursing colleges abound and there are many to choose from both online and off, with numerous higher learning institutions claiming to be the absolute best. With so many choices available, how can prospective students know which nurse colleges would fit their unique needs the most?

When choosing from among the various nurse colleges, either via the Internet or in the traditional brick-and-mortar sense, first consider your career goals. Where do you envision yourself five years in the future? Are you starting from the beginning and just entering the wondrous world of nursing or are you a seasoned veteran looking to further your education and knowledge even more?

There are nurse colleges that offer programs and courses for those who are just starting out and want to earn a degree or diploma, pass the required examination, and then work as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), also called licensed practical nurse (LPN) in many areas. There is also a multitude of programs for those who want to become registered nurses (RN's) and work in a variety of sectors in health care.

After successfully completing the necessary courses and receiving either a diploma or Associate's degree in nursing-- and then passing the licensing examination, RN's will have the opportunity to work in many areas of health care. This includes assisted living facilities, doctor's offices, hospitals, nursing homes and a variety of other interesting and rewarding work settings.

RN's wishing to further their careers and increase their earnings and responsibilities will want to consider earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. A BSN opens so many more doors and a large number of nurse colleges offer convenient programs specifically for the working registered nurse who needs to balance their career, education, in addition to their home life.

If you have such lofty ambitions and admirable career goals, do make sure that the nurse colleges you look into offer the programs that will meet your ultimate needs.

The cost for earning your nursing education is based on a number of different variables. The first of which, is the type of program you are interested in, the degree you intend on earning, and whether or not you have access to any type of financial assistance.

Obviously the higher the degree the more costly it will be to earn your education. However, tuition alone should not become an obstacle in bettering yourself, expanding your medical knowledge and skill sets, and earning a degree in nursing. Most nurse colleges will have a financial aid department or advisor's you can speak to. If you are currently employed, ask about tuition reimbursement programs available to nurses.

Boost Your Career With a Doctorate in Business Administration

ByRose Musyoka

A doctorate in business administration degree (or DBA) would prepare students to take up a long and rewarding career. Upon graduation, there would be the opportunity to take up a senior position in the corporate world, or begin a role as a researcher or teacher in academia.

The actual courses that would be completed would depend upon the student's chosen career track and these can include accounting, finance, strategic planning, modern communication practices, ethics, international relations, and organizational theory. Prior to graduation, there would be the need to complete and defend a research project or thesis which would have to be unique in nature.

To gain admission into this type of doctorate program, there would in all likelihood by a requirement to have completed a bachelor's honor in a related subject, and perhaps even a master's degree. Eligibility criteria do vary dependent upon the school and faculty, and certain institutions may accept applications from potential students who have many years of hands on experience in industry in lieu of previous academic success.

Today, there is the option of enrolling for an online doctorate in business administration. Such programs have a number of inherent advantages when compared to attending traditional brick and mortar schools. For instance, students can often choose to complete the tasks that are set at a time of their own choosing, therefore allowing them to continue with a career at the same time. Also, an online study program is a great choice for those people who live in a region of the country where they are too far from an institution of higher learning or are unable to find a suitable program of their choice from a local university.

If you do have an interest in studying remotely, make sure you locate a online program that is accredited by a recognized accrediting institution. There are some online schools which are fake.

Prior to enrolling in any doctorate in business administration degree program, it is important to compare the curricula from a number of different institutions. You should consider what area of specialization would best match your career goals, for example, finance or marketing etc.

Though earning potential is not always the driving force for choosing to take part in higher studies, it is the case that graduates holding a PhD are able to command the highest salaries. For example, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, financial mangers with higher level qualifications earned a median income of $90,000 in 2009. Deadlines Are Important Online - Tips to Keep You on Track

BySheila Shanker

When you go to school online, it's too easy to miss deadlines. You don't meet people in the hall and get reminded of tests or projects. Many online universities have announcements to keep you on track, but often it's not enough. Every student has his or her way to be on track and not miss any deadlines. But if you feel your method is no longer working for the online environment, below are a few suggestions:

Review the syllabus of the class

Usually the syllabus contains all projects and tests with dates. If not, check out a "schedule" screen. Print that out and put it on a binder, so that you can find it easily. Highlight all the due dates. You could also file the syllabus in your computer, just in case and keep it there. However, if something happens to your system, you may not have access to the file until the problem is fixed.

If you travel a lot or if you plan on doing school projects at work, it's a good idea to keep this information online -- you could email the syllabus to yourself, so that it's available wherever you have Internet connection.

Add details

When you make notes about the deadlines, also include details, such as the manner the project or test is to be delivered - could be via internal email system, a drop box, posted in a discussion forum or submitted through the system Turnitin. Depending on your school, a class may require that you first ran the paper through Turnitin and then put it in a drop box, a two-step process.

In the case of online tests, you could add the web address of the test and any details about it. Some tests are take-home and in this case, you may set up one date to obtain the test and another one to submit it.

Obtain a monthly calendar and colored pens

You could print out a monthly calendar with a month per page. Based on the due dates highlighted in the syllabus, mark the calendar using one color per class. Keep this calendar on a wall or in other visible place. You could do the same using your computer, but again, if your system goes down, you won't have this important information.

You could save this file in the cloud, such as with dropbox.com or mediafire.com, free services that keep your documents online, so that if you have Internet service, you can access and update the file online. Since this is a dynamic file, one that may change depending on your situation, it's better not to send it to yourself, or you may not know which file is the latest.

Consider online reminder services

Many students use online reminder services, such as memotome.com, which automatically sends you reminders. You could also use existing alarms embedded in many systems, but these may not work if you're not at your computer. Online reminder services may allow you to add details and other information - be sure to take advantage of them. One of the benefits of these services is that you can set them up to send you reminders days in advance, so when the deadline arrives, it's not a surprise and you have had time to tie in all lose ends.

Benefits of Online Degrees

ByRachel Levenson

In recent years, online degree programs have evolved from being classified as the lazy way out of getting a degree, to being a serious and practical alternative to enrolling in classes that demand more time, attention and money than may be necessary.

The lifestyle of many aspiring students these days does not always cater to attending classes on a routine basis, making it that much more difficult to balance a hefty work schedule and academic success. Online degrees offer a unique opportunity for a student to "have it all," allowing the opportunity to juggle a loaded work schedule and a productive academic schedule without feeling the need to sacrifice.

This may prove especially beneficial to those who have already established themselves in a work environment, but find that their skills are in need of fine-tuning or that they thirst for additional knowledge to allow them to further thrive in their careers. With the responsibilities of children and spouses at home, it is most certainly a more viable option to enroll in online courses to gain field knowledge than to add the stresses of traditional university life.

Online degrees also have the exclusive advantage of being bargain-priced, with not only cheaper tuition rates, but eliminated transportation expenses, in-transit cups of coffee and distracting social ventures. Reading material is also provided in online form, meaning that you should never have to invest in pricey textbooks that - in all actuality - you'd only be likely to pick up a handful of times in your studies anyway.

Academically, these types of degrees tend to also be more specialized in their offerings. It is often unlikely that you'll be taking classes that do not pertain to your field of study, meaning that you won't be wasting time learning the chemistry of wine when all you really need to know is how to bolster your marketing credentials.

Those looking to obtain a bachelor's degree would be wise to seek out online opportunities through accredited online institutions. It not only saves you time and provides an impressive display of opportunity, but typically gives you free reign on your future academic ventures. If planned properly, all credits you earn in the process of obtaining your online degree should be transferable to any university that you decide to physically enroll in. Whether you have your college ideas concretely cemented into your mind or not, online degrees serve as a fantastic tool to earn your diploma your way, or at the very least serve as a launching pad for your future academic endeavors.

You can get an accredited online degree at Lincoln College Online. They offer associate and bachelor degrees online including business, criminal justice curricula. For more information, please visit http://www.lincolnonline.edu.

Get High Paying Jobs Without A Degree

Getting high paying jobs without a degree isn't easy. You can't deny it. The economy today is a moving target. College tuition is going up every quarter. Many of us are searching for high paying jobs without a degree. Many people had ingrained in them the belief that in order to be financially successful you must go to college and get your degree. Only then could one go out and get a steady and secure job. And that may have worked before. But for a lot of people these days it's just not doable.

Successful entrepreneurs pay attention to trends. When they identify a profitable trend they get out in front of it. Believe it or not some of the most successful people you've heard of never went to college. Henry Ford never even graduated high school. Bill Gates dropped out of college. They saw opportunity in the market and took action.

Without a doubt the biggest trend in our lifetimes is the internet. Nothing in history has changed the face of business and opportunity on this scale. The opportunity here is to create incredible income without ever leaving home. Home based business is booming. According to Forbes Magazine, in the next 3-5 years about 80 million Americans will start a home based business.

There are many great reasons to start a home business. Work when you want. Spend more time with the family. The tax advantages alone are worth the effort. But of course everyone knows the biggest reason... Be Your Own Boss!

Unfortunately many new ventures fail. It's very important to find a real and legitimate opportunity. You must have a product or service of real value in the market. Your company must provide great training and support during your training. You need proven, results oriented systems.

Right now you have a real opportunity. You can partner with a high commission direct sales company. Successful commission sales is practically the only way to actually decide what you want to earn and get it. Add to that the fact that you can do it all without commuting or putting up with a grumpy boss or any of the other routine annoyances everyone else has to deal with. You now have true freedom and you're able to leverage your time exponentially instead of trading hours for dollars.

What's the catch? Well, you have to actually take independent action. That's not what most people do. You can't achieve this lifestyle without personal initiative. But if you are one of the rare go getters then this is definitely for you. You can get high paying jobs without a degree.

Accredited Online Nursing Schools

ByPaul Trammell

Online nursing schools become accredited schools in the same way that campus based schools attain accreditation status. The nursing schools will need to apply for accreditation through an independent and private accrediting agency. The agency will then put the online schools for nursing programs through a review process and check the level of training provided against a quality standard of nursing education.

Although most, if not all accredited online schools will provide their accreditation status on their website. It is vital for you to check and make sure that each online university does have accreditation status. There are two main reasons to check for accreditation status. Firstly, if you use a different school for part of your nursing degree, or you wish to take an advanced degree later, schools will only accept credits towards your degree from an accredited school program. Secondly, you will find that most employers in the medical sector will only recognize your nursing degree if it was obtained from online nursing schools that have accreditation status. To the employer if they see that the degree was attained from an accredited nursing school, then they are assured that your level of nursing training was of the highest quality.

You can find all the accredited nursing schools in your state by visiting the following website: nlnac.org/forms/directory_search.htm. This website is run by the agency National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), who only include accredited nursing programs in their database.

There is a wide variety of nursing degree programs available such as: RN-to-BSN, master's, baccalaureate & associate's degree programs. There are also accredited specialist programs such as nurse midwife degree or nurse anesthetist, which is arguably the highest paying nursing job available today. The accreditation of the nursing anesthesia programs available online and offline is run by The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). The midwifery education programs are accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation (ACNM).

Online nursing schools provide a convenient way for you to take accredited nursing degree programs that can be completed around your lifestyle and work commitments. There is currently a shortage of qualified nurses in the United States which is partly due to a demand from the aging baby boomer generation reaching retirement age. This means that job security in the medical sector is assured with an inevitable rise in nursing salaries for the next several years at least.

A Counseling Degree Can Lead To A Career Helping Others

If people trust and respect you, if they tell you their deepest, darkest secrets, or come to you frequently for advice, you might consider a counseling degree. As with any career, of course, it's important that you enjoy the work that's involved. If you're really good at what you do, then that's a huge plus!

With counseling, helping others is the essence of the work involved. Becoming a counselor, however, takes time, since there are states and specific counseling occupations that require counselors to have their degrees at the Master's level as well as licenses and certifications that might require continued studies to maintain. It also takes a lot of energy, both physically and emotionally, to help other people with their problems.

At the same time, employment prospects for counselors are expected to be favorable. It was highly anticipated that employment for counselors who held more than 600,000 jobs in 2008 was to grow faster than the average for all occupations. Some of the reasons for this are: mental health services are expected to increase for the disabled, injuries and disabilities are expected to accompany an increasing elderly population, and rehab counseling is beginning to become more common for drug offenders than jail.

With the appropriate counseling degree and any needed state licenses in hand, you might expect to find work with people who have other specific needs or a variety of them as well. You might, for example, work with people who have experienced trauma or who have education, relationship, or career-related needs.

Depending upon the type of counseling you hope to provide, you might find counseling degree programs in areas such as marriage and family therapy, elementary or secondary school counseling, gerontological counseling, substance abuse or addictions counseling, clinical mental health counseling, and more. The courses required as part of these and other related degree programs might cover areas such as diversity, career development, professional ethics, and growth and development. Certificates and licenses for counselors require that they follow specific codes of ethics.

As of 2008, the median annual wages for counselors were between about $31,000 and $51,000, depending upon the area of specialty. The median wages for rehab counselors were on the lower end of the spectrum, while those for educational, vocational, and school counselors were on the higher end. Advancement opportunities might exist in areas such as education, research, administration, or in a supervisory capacity. One's salary may also depend on his or her level of education.

Two of the agencies that handle certification include the National Board of Certified Counselors and the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. People who are considering counseling degrees or counseling work should check with agencies such as these, along with local and state governments and potential employers, to determine what might be expected in terms of credentialing.

Many students and families rely upon scholarships and grants to help pay for their education. In instances where additional studies are required, students might also find employers willing to pay for tuition, workshops, and more, including those that might be required for maintaining or enhancing certification. It is also good to keep in mind that you can earn your degree through many of the accredited online counseling programs. It may even be a way to save some money on your education.

Job Duties Of A Flight Dispatcher

If you're considering an aviation degree, you might consider studying to become a flight dispatcher. These behind-the-scenes aviation employees work to improve airline safety. In fact, they're as responsible for safe airline travel just as pilots are.

Airline or flight dispatchers work from the ground, planning and tracking the progress of an aircraft as it travels. They provide responsibilities that are considered an added safety measure, and any mistakes that they make have the potential to literally be deadly.

Because flight dispatchers, as much as pilots, are legally responsible for a flight's safety, they sign off on flights that are released. In some instances, they might have to delay, change, or cancel flights. Weather can have a lot to do with flight delays, changes, and cancellations. Because of this, aviation students must know also about meteorology in instances where they plan on becoming dispatchers.

Flight dispatchers work with aircraft captains on pre-flight planning and are involved in decisions also having to do with equipment problems and providing crew members with safety-of-flight information. Their decisions should also take into account financial and scheduling considerations having to do with the companies with which they work.

While a flight is in progress, dispatchers monitor it through the use of sophisticated technologies, and they advise the captain and crew of anything that might compromise their safety and the safety of passengers. Video surveillance helps dispatchers to follow traffic patterns and other in-air activity. Dispatchers also work with telephones and equipment such as radios, computers, and an Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS). The latter, a digital system, allows dispatchers to communicate with crew members via short and simple messages that are transmitted via satellite or radio.

Training to become a flight dispatcher often involves advanced flight planning instruction whereby students in meteorology courses might learn about TAF forecasts or statements about weather conditions that are expected at an airport over a certain amount of time. Meteorology-related training might also involve learning to read and interpret what's known as METAR weather reporting formats that pilots use in pre-flight weather briefings.

It's important for flight dispatchers also to understand Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) en-route low and high altitude charts that are designed for navigation within specific altitudes. Students in aviation degree programs that can lead to careers as flight dispatchers might also expect to study aircraft performance, air traffic management, and more. At least one specialized aviation program for flight dispatchers provides intensive studies of Boeing 737-800 Aircraft Systems as well as insight into take-off performance issues, runways, international flight operations, and extended twin engine operations.

Aviation dispatchers in the United States are licensed. They obtain this licensing by taking FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Written and Oral/Practical certification exams. The written exam, at least, is the same exam that airline transport pilots take. Licensing isn't always required for work as flight followers, who in some instances perform dispatching duties without the legal responsibility. However, flight followers often are encouraged to become licensed anyway. In order to take the exam, students often are required to have taken at least six semesters of aviation instruction. Aircraft dispatcher credentials as far as education goes might in some instances be offered as part of a specialized program for students who fill certain requirements. Others might be associated with more general aviation degrees from a variety of colleges.

Advantages of Enrolling in a BSN Program

If you can truly say you have a clearer view on the way BSN or ADN programs work, it might be time to start figuring out whether to choose a BSN program for your preparation as a future nurse or if sticking with your nursing diploma is the soundest thing to do. There are a lot of things to take into consideration, and probably one of the best ways to handle things is to follow the path filled with the advantages and perks a BSN program can display.

BSN programs add value to your education as a nurse. Even though they are comparable to ADN programs, BSN alternatives offer some intriguing perks and they truly manage to add value to the whole learning process. To be more precise, these programs enable students to learn about health promotion and leadership, management, and disease prevention, they teach nurses how to reduce risks and how to better cope with their group assisting tasks. This is not an exhaustive list of all the things nurses holding a BSN degree will know once they graduate; however, the list comes to show just how insightful, updated, and useful BSN training really is and how it can tremendously help nurses get even more involved in communities' lives.

BSN programs have more chances of landing a great job. Despite the fact that there is still an important percentage of current nurses who did not enter a BSN program and can only claim the existence of their nursing diploma or their associate's degree in nursing inside their portfolio; some aspects need to be clarified. First of all, no one claims that not having a BSN degree can affect your chances of getting hired, but the amount of time you spend looking for a great job that pays well and involves more responsibilities might be shorter should you possess a BSN degree.

Hospitals and clinics typically choose BSN nurses that have recently become RNs more often due to the previously mentioned perks of these programs. The need for excellent management skills within the healthcare industry and the need to cut back costs and boost efficiency turn hospital managers' heads toward BSN nurses.

Plus, there are many states that only hire nurses who possess a BSN degree, and they tend to avoid hiring ADN nurses.

BSN nurses earn more money. This is definitely another strong argument that comes to lobby for getting your BSN degree. You could be looking at average salaries of up to $62,674 for registered nurses; $63,820 for nurse case managers; $61,300 for nursing managers; $88,300 for nursing directors.

Also, in terms of career advancement, you will probably have a better chance of getting where you want to be faster and easier. Having taken hospital management courses and passed the corresponding exams in college means you are one step ahead in becoming a chief nurse. With the right amount of experience and working inside a healthcare facility, you are much closer to seeing your dream turn into reality. Career advancement usually brings more responsibilities, besides fatter checks, but you are prone to like your new tasks.

Nurses earn a lot for their job, which is why a lot are tempted to take up nursing as a career. Because of this nurses are in demand.

Online Education Has Come of Age!

Online education is becoming increasingly more popular as the quality and quantity of online degree programs expands. A few short years ago the perception of many professionals in the corporate world was that these degree programs were substandard. If that ever were the case, it is definitely no longer.

As the market embraced the expanding need for online education to cater to working adults, the programs achieved higher quality year after year. At this point most degree programs offered online are at least par with traditional programs and in many cases are much preferred by the working public. Online accredited universities can be easily found with a quick online search.

Most colleges now understand the value of having Internet based teaching modules in one way or another. The technology is too valuable and widespread not to take advantage of it. According to the Sloan Consortium's report of 2007, 5 years after the roll out of online education, there were almost 3.5 million students taking an online course during the fall of 2006. In addition to that there was a growth rate of almost 10% in online enrollments vs. the 1.5% growth of all educational enrollment combined. This in and of itself testifies to the strength and market of online education. I am sure the statistics have even expanded since that last report.

Taking an online course is quite tough. In a traditional setting it is possible to ask friends or classmates questions and get answers very quickly. While this may be an efficient use of time, working online through email or through a newsgroup setting requires the student to research answers to their questions in much more depth than otherwise. My experience is that the person walks away with a much more profound answer to their question, and that answer is now internalized into their knowledge base.

As a person that spent almost 8 years in traditional schooling and then another 2 years in online education, I can speak with experience that they both have their upsides and downsides. However, for the working adult online degree programs are absolutely the way to go. No longer is it a requirement that you need to quit your job, put your spouse to work, and head off to the bookstore. You now have the educational opportunities to advance your career right at your keyboard.

There are obvious degree programs that make sense to receive at a traditional institution. Anything that requires hands on lab work is an example. But even some of these are being addressed by remote and online institutions.

Most everyone understands the need to educate themselves to increase their financial value to the corporate community. For those that are in a situation where they have families and / or need to work online education is most definitely an alternative that will take you far in your chosen career.

As someone who spent 8 years in College, I now publish articles about various topics. I write about things of interest to myself and others. Check out our College Majors List for the highest paying majors in play right now.

I enjoy writing articles and research the information myself. If interested in online education we have a great write up about MBA Distance Education for those interested in Online Business education.

Crime Scene Technician - Becoming a Civilian Crime Scene Technician

The Scientific Investigation of the Scenes of Crimes

Over the past few years many law enforcement agencies find themselves in a severe budget crunch. This has led them to enact changes in their daily operations. One such change is to hire and train civilians to serve as crime scene technicians.

This method of filling open crime scene technician (CST) slots produces immediate savings in that those who land these jobs do not have to be "sworn" police officers. The benefits are fewer and of course salaries are lower too. Some agencies, however, consider this as an "entry level" position and may, based upon the effectiveness of the individual, pick up the cost of sending a technician to Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) when funds are available.

In many agencies a crime scene technician or a crime scene investigator are virtually the same. In some cases the technician is a pay and training level grade below an investigator, But most agencies merely use either term to describe those individuals tasked with the responsibility of locating, evaluating and collecting physical evidence from crime scenes.

To get an idea as to the salary ranges being offered to crime scene technicians I suggest you perform an Internet search using the keywords "crime scene technician jobs," or something to that effect..

Educational requirements will vary based on the needs of the local area. Most certainly a high school education is a must, but most agencies are seeking a minimum of an Associate Degree in any of the following disciplines: Forensic Science, Criminalistics, Criminal Justice, Chemistry, Biology, or related field from an accredited community or junior college or technical institute.

Definitions related to the work of the crime scene technician. These evidence procedures and the order in which they are completed may vary from one agency to another-based upon established protocols. The following procedure is offered as a generalized approach to investigating a crime scene.

Physical Evidence: Criminal investigation involves people and/or physical objects--things. Crimes are committed by people, but they use certain physical objects to commit these crimes. It is these things used or touched by criminals that constitute what is referred to as physical or forensic evidence.

Scene Security: The specific duty of the first official to arrive at the scene of a crime is to protect and preserve life and property (offer aid and assistance to those present, apply first aid and summon the necessary medical help); and then ensure the security of the crime scene by erecting barriers (crime scene tape) and posting sentries at all possible entrances and exits.

Conduct a Visual Survey of the Scene: The initial walk-through will include a visual survey of the scene, making note of any potential physical evidence. Preliminary photographs and/or video are taken at this time.

Conduct a Thorough Scene Search: Depending upon the complexity of the scene, more than one technician will be required for the search. Potential physical evidence is located and marked with flags, signs or evidence tents for later close up photos and collection.

Maintain a Written Log: As the search progresses a written log of all findings is kept.

Prepare a Crime Scene Sketch: A rough sketch is begun for both indoor and outdoor crime scenes. The sketch will mark the locations of visible evidence and accurate measurements are taken to detail the exact location of each "thing" noted.

Process the Scene for Latent Fingerprints: Using either latent print powders or chemicals, as the type of evidence requires, any physical object that may have been touched by the perpetrator will be processed.

Perform Preliminary, Presumptive Tests for Physiological Fluids, Narcotics and Drugs: While confirmatory lab testing will also be required, physiological fluids and drugs should be subjected to presumptive, non-destructive field testing methods.

Collect and Package All Physical Evidence. This is one of the most critical functions of the CST. Court cases do not take place after a week or so following the investigation. It may take years before a criminal trial occurs. Evidence must be collected, marked and preserved with this thought in mind. For example: DNA and physiological evidence may degrade and become useless over time if steps are not taken to preserve it. Blood and semen samples can lose their value if packaged in plastic containers-especially if they are collected while still in a liquid state.

As you may plainly see-crime scene investigation is a complex task that must be completed using scientific principles and guidelines. Many criminal cases have been lost in court because forensic evidence was either mishandled, misinterpreted or was completely absent. The CST is a vital link in the chain-of-evidence, and it is a position that requires sincere devotion to the tasks at hand. The purpose and the integrity of the crime scene technician-as is the evidence he/she collects-are both on trial.

For more specific information on the tools and methods used at crime scenes, please visit the CSI TECH BLOG

Numerous agencies throughout the U.S. also recognize the completion of the home study course offered by the American Institute of Applied Science. Visit the AIAS Website for more information.

Online Education for Adult Learners

Today many working adults are returning to school, seeking to secure some type of certification or a college degree. Many of these adult learners have children at home that need their attention and because of their hectic schedule can't attend traditional classroom settings. Yet the need and desire to attain higher education is a must for these working adults in order to provide a better living for their families and themselves. In need of higher education, but no time for traditional classroom setting, then maybe online education is your solution? But let's be realistic, as a working adult, online schooling can be very challenging and one must be highly organized and self motivated to succeed in the online learning environment.

Most online schools will administer a series of questions to see if the online learning environment is right for the potential student. It's very important that you are totally honest with yourself when considering enrolling for online classes, especially if you've been away out of school for some time. The need to improve your lifestyle can sometimes cloud your judgment, so make sure your self evaluation is thorough, often times the need to earn a better living can cause one to make an irrational decision. Let's face it, enrolling in an institution of higher learning can be one of the most rewarding decisions you could ever make, but please understand you are signing a legally binding agreement to satisfactorily complete each course in an allotted amount of time, so make completely sure everything in your personal life is somewhat in order so that you can balance each day with proper time management. There are many success stories of adult learners completing college or technical schools, but there are also the working adults who didn't complete their endeavors, signed legally binding agreements and now are left with an outstanding balance owed to a technical school or college and have nothing to show for it all because of good intentions, without a realistic approach. What is your reason for wanting to seek a degree or certification?

Self evaluation: These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself and be totally honest with yourself concerning your motives for wanting to attend college or technical school.

Is your need for a technical certification or a college degree something you have desired for quite some time? Y/NDo you feel unfulfilled without a college degree or technical certification? Y/NIs earning more money your motive for enrolling in school? Y/NDo you desire a degree because a sibling, spouse, friend or fellow worker has a degree or certification? Y/NDo you imagine yourself away from your present job in some great administrative or managerial position upon your graduation from college of technical school? Y/NHave you been preparing yourself for your return to school, mentally physically and schedule wise? Y/NFinally, is the online learning environment right for you? Maybe you should consider the traditional classroom setting instead?

Self Evaluation: These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself and be totally honest with yourself concerning your motives for wanting to attend college or technical school. If you answered yes to question number 1, that's great, having had a strong desire to obtain your higher education is definitely one of the best reasons for starting the journey to attain a degree or certification. There's no need to be apprehensive if your desire is strong enough; desire coupled with the right school can spell success and lead to a better future for you, and if you have children, attaining a higher education will definitely be a good influence on their decisions in their own lives to follow in your footsteps. One of the main reasons most adults go back to school, is to fulfill their destiny. If you feel that you are not complete without your degree then go for it. Of course making more money is probably the single most motive for most working adults returning to school, but remember the old saying, "Money can't buy you happiness, but it sure can ease the pain while you search for happiness." Seriously though, most graduates can tell you that getting the amount of money you feel your worth in the work place can take time to achieve. Experience is what you get paid for, of course the degree will afford you the opportunity to earn more money, but you're the only one who can activate your potential for earning the amount of money you believe your worth. So don't allow money to be your only motivation, but rather choose to do something you've always wanted to do, so that you will excel in your field even if the amount of salary is not up to par of your expectations at first.

Focus on being the best you can be in school, go that extra mile to learn as much as you can, look to intern at a company while in school if possible. If your motive for attending college or technical school is to impress family members or friends then I would encourage you to seriously reconsider enrolling until you can reassess your reasons for going back to school. Online classes can be very demanding at times, especially for adult learners, your motives for attending school will play a key part in your success. Rather than seeking to impress others, let your motivation be based on a humanitarian reason, such as wanting to help others with the skills and knowledge you will attain. It's ok to imagine ourself in a great position after graduation, but be realistic, as an online adult student; you will need the discipline to say no to family members and friends when it's time to study.

The best positions are usually very demanding, make sure before you choose a field of study that you are academically aware of what is required of you to graduate. Are you good at math, do you read books in your spare time or do you spend more time in front of the television? Before I enrolled in my first online classes I spent some time refreshing myself on different subjects. I purchased some affordable training software and practiced tutorials on typing, math, and Microsoft word, because these are just some of the basic skills needed to be a successful student in the online learning environment. As a working adult, your life as student will undergo a radical change, so don't just imagine yourself on a great job later on, live your life daily as though you are working in the field, read books pertaining to your desired field, watch training videos of the field of study your interested in, this will help you to keep abreast of any new developments in your field. There tons of free training tutorials on the internet. Search the web and make a listing of your favorites and utilize the free training on the internet.

I prefer interactive training DVD's. I've purchased some training CD-rom's to help me learn Microsoft Word at an affordable price, I love the fact that the video can paused and replayed so If I missed anything or If someone interrupts my study I can resume my studies later on with no problems. Preparing yourself for the online environment is important for the adult learner. Practicing training can help to get you up to speed before you enroll for class. Remember e-mailing will be your best friend when taking an online class, so definitely brush-up on your e-mail etiquette.

So take your time, make sure if you're going to attend school online that the school fits your needs and ask questions before you sign any agreements. There will never be a perfect time to start school as an adult student online, but with some planning, preparation and by setting realistic goals you can be successful.

How To Succeed In Online Courses

ByRobyn Stone

Online courses are a terrific way for busy young people, working parents, and professionals with obligations to complete higher education. There are many reasons you might want to take correspondence courses online. You might have a full time job with a packed schedule and need to study at irregular times. You might want to benefit from the quality of education in another country. You might not have the time or money to pursue a full degree program at a university at the time. For whatever reasons you choose to take online courses, you should understand that your success or failure depends entirely on your ability to take responsibility for your education. In this article you will learn about what it takes to succeed in online courses.

Manage your time
The secret to succeeding in online courses is learning how to manage your time. Time management is a skill that is absolutely crucial to develop if you want to succeed in your correspondence courses. It is really all about prioritizing. First, calculate how much time you will need to study every day. Then, allot a specific time in your schedule for studying. If you have a busy work schedule during the day, then separate a few hours at night for studies. The important thing to remember is that if you do not schedule study time, chances are you will not get any.

Find the ideal place to study
The ideal place to study can vary from student to student. Some students prefer to study in complete silence. Others need some kind of soft music around them to concentrate. Whatever atmosphere you prefer, be sure you find it. Your study place should have a good internet connection and a power outlet for your computer. Your environment should ideally be well lit and clutter free. For the most part, a quiet room away from the hustle and bustle of the home or office is recommended.

Concentration is the key to progress
Because in many cases you do not have the support system of a physical class room, it can be easy to get distracted when it is time to study. It goes without saying that a strong work ethic is needed to be successful at your online courses. One of the most common mistakes students of online courses make, is leaving their chat and email accounts open while studying. This may seem like a small distraction, but it can end up wasting a lot of your time. You would not make a friendly phone call in the middle of a test would you? Then do not leave your chat box or email account open. If you leave the door open for distraction it will come in and make itself at home.

What I Learned From Online Learning

In this day in age, knowledge and continuing education is a must! There are many options available. You can use Traditional learning such as a traditional college or trade school or distance learning (school by mail) or E Learning (online courses and schools). Today, we will look at E Learning.

E Learning is rapidly becoming a favorite among many people, in many settings. It allows for learning on your time, at your pace and is available anywhere that you can connect to the internet. It is often is less expensive than traditional learning courses. There are many free courses available, but be wary! There could be a catch such as: You take the course for free, but must pay for certificates or certifications; or the course/school is not accredited. So depending on your needs, you will want to investigate further.

If you are learning for your own benefit, and do not need to present the training to your employer there are a variety of sites that provide excellent training available for free. It just depends on what you want to learn.

If you are learning for your job, you will want to check the reputation and accreditation status of the school/course you're interested in. You should also check with your human resources department to see if they will accept the certificate or proof of training that this school/course offers.

Getting Pre Employment Certifications Online

Employers love to see certifications and proof of abilities when interviewing potential new employees. And, in some cases, it could very well be the difference between you getting the job and someone else getting the job.

Unfortunately, unless it is employer sponsored, these tests/certifications are not free. Some can be rather costly, while others are not. Research your sites carefully and read all of the pricing information before signing up.

Most sites will offer free practice tests for you to take before you sign up for the certification test. I strongly recommend you take advantage of these! Imagine paying for a certification and then failing it? If you utilize the practice testing first, you will know if you need to bone up for the actual test, AND, most sites charge to retake a failed test - who wants to pay more than they have to?

Just be wary! There are plenty of scams out there! There is nothing wrong with running a search on the site your are looking at!

Integrating Podcasts Into E-Learning

The podcast, also known as a non-streamed webcast, is a batch of digital audio and/or video files, which is released in successive episodes and can be downloaded. The files are hosted on the distributor's server as a web feed and accessed by the audience through a podcatcher, which is a specialized software. This way, they can access the web feed and download the newest files, manually or automatically. All content becomes ready for offline use.

How can we use this in e-learning? Podcasts can actually add value to a course, as long as you focus on your objectives and pay attention to their making and distribution. Knowing your audience is the first thing you should have in mind, so find out characteristics such as: mobility (office based or on the road), preferences and technology awareness. You will need to base the entire podcast on these variables.

Another thing that you should consider is sound quality. Needless to say, nobody likes background noises or distractions. A poor recording will reduce the value of an interview. Get a good microphone and a pair of headphones, an mp3 recorder so that you can do interviews at any time, and an audio editing software. You can record a sample in the specific environment, just to see how it sounds, and make the necessary adjustments before starting the actual podcast.

There are some types of podcast that you can use. Using a monologue means there will be one speaker only, so it needs to be brief and interesting, based on a well-written script. Another type, more engaging and lengthy, borrows the format of a magazine show, which combines monologue with guests and conversation. Although it's more time consuming and difficult to produce, it's a very efficient type. You can also make an audio tutorial, as part of a larger learning package. The high density of information will make it difficult to pay attention to, so keep it short. And, as a general rule, try not to make an episode of a podcast longer than 5 minutes.

A more conversational type is the interview, but it also needs some preparation in advance. You have to have your questions ready before even thinking of improvising. Send them out to your subject as well, so they he knows what to expect. Ask open questions that will engage the person next to you, and make the final question something like "is there anything else you would like to add that I haven't asked?" Controversial topics might be interesting to listen to, but you shouldn't go off limits. Make sure that you research the topic and the interviewee, and that nothing catches you off-guard. Have some questions that you can cut out in case you run out of time, and prepare some extra questions to ask if you have too much time left.

Edit the recording as soon as possible, while it's still fresh in your head. Save new files rather than overlapping the edited version and the original. If you use a soundtrack, check for possible copyright infringement. Finally, you can set up a RSS feed for podcatchers, or simply upload the mp3 files to your LMS of choice - Moodle has a built-in audio player, for example, and works really well with this format.

How to Create an Efficient Tutorial

Whether you are teaching IT, sewing techniques or industrial design, tutorials are the perfect method to make everything available to the learners and easy to understand. You can use video, Power Point presentations or screen recording software, but you can also use a written tutorial, accompanied by images. They can be used both online and offline, and in various situations. Sometimes, tutorials can play the role of an entire training course.

When it comes to tutorials, it is important that the images and the text support each other - while some images can show things that are difficult to explain in words, sometimes words can describe things that cannot be pictured. It is also important that your tutorial has a clear sequence, so that it appears clear to the learner.

The first paragraph of your written tutorial, or the introductory part of the presentation, should contain attention-grabbing phrases. Engaging the learner should start from the very beginning and this can be done by asking a question on the specific topic or sharing a shocking piece of information on the subject. The testimonials of others can also be used here. The higher impact this segment has on the learner, the more interested will he become in the subject matter.

The next part of the tutorial should briefly present the learning objectives - in a friendly manner, rather than as a list. These should state what topics you are going to cover and how this would benefit the learner. Besides objectives, an approximated length of the tutorial could be useful.

The actual content should be presented in an interactive manner, for as much as possible. For example, in a slide show, every three or four slides should be followed by a visual or audio piece. Bringing the presentation to life definitely makes it more appealing to the audience. The purpose here is to express the key concepts in a memorable manner. Concision, relevant content and feedback are elements that should be kept in mind.

Examples are what makes theory easier to understand and retain. They show how theory can be put into practice and, in the end, that is the only thing that matters. Case studies are a great tool, and they function best when they are directly connected with the field of interest of the group. As much as possible, the learners should be engaged in the conversation, with the aid of multiple choice questions.

A recap of the key concepts should be provided afterwards. This ensures that all concepts are clearly understood and it is more than a simple repetition. It is a summary, which can be translated as a bullet list that the learners can take with them and actually use in their daily work.

The final step of a good tutorial is to show how the newly learned information can be applied at the workplace. You can use more real-life examples in this section and you have to make sure that the learners understand what is expected of them after completing the training.

From getting everyone's attention to providing applications of the key concepts, every step of a tutorial is important for its overall success. Although simple, this structure leads to effective tutorials that you can use regardless of the field.

Scholarship Opportunities for Distance Learning PhD Students

ByAndrew Bicknell

If you are considering a distance learning PhD program but aren't quite sure how you are going to pay for it what are your options. Fortunately there are financial aid options available to students who are opting to go the distance degree route.

For doctoral candidates attending accredited colleges financial aid can come in a variety forms. There are grants and loans that are available from different government entities and scholarships available through the school and private organizations. There are also a variety of organizations that conduct contests in which the winners are awarded monetary rewards that can be used to pay tuition and other school costs.

Financial aid is not given to everyone who wants or needs it; prospective doctorate students will need to meet certain criteria in order to obtain aid in paying for their education. Different organizations will look for different things depending on what they consider important but most are looking for certain academic potential or achievement. Some will only consider students from certain ethnic groups, religious affiliations, or even gender.

Scholarships that are given by individual schools are for those students attending that institution. These are usually limited and are harder to come by. These types of scholarships are given to students who are at the top of their class or show the potential for high academic achievement. The most coveted is the full-ride scholarship which will pay all tuition costs, books, and fees. In some cases a full scholarship may also provide for some living expenses. Many colleges also offer partial scholarships that will help lessen the financial burden on their students.

To find out about scholarship opportunities at your school of choice contact the financial aid office. They will have an up-to-date list of what is being offered and what you need to do to apply. It is important to that most scholarships have deadlines that must be met in order to be considered so be sure to get all your documentation turned in ahead of time.

If you or a family member is a member of a particular organization or club it is a good idea to check and see what type of scholarship opportunities they might have. In many cases these organizations do open up their scholarship opportunities to the general public but members and their families have a far better chance of being awarded one.

Many times these organizations will have a contest, normally writing an essay, in order to determine which candidate is most deserving. They normally require the student to be enrolled full-time and in some instances are not to concerned about grade-point averages. It is important to make sure the organization or club is legitimate. Check for an address and phone number on their website and make sure they have some sort of obligation, requirement or fee associated with their financial aid.

The main point to remember when it comes to financial aid for distance learning is to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Be sure to get all necessary paper work in early and don't place all your hopes on one application. Apply for as many scholarships as you can find that fit your situation and you'll increase the odds of getting the financial help you need to accomplish your educational goals.

Get Your Doctorate Through a Distance Learning College

ByAndrew Bicknell

Earning an associate's or bachelor's degree online has been a popular way to get a college education for quite some time. Recently though many colleges, both online and those with traditional campuses, have begun to offer advanced master's and doctoral degrees through distance learning programs.

If you already have a master's degree and want to take that next and final step in academia then it makes a world of sense to strongly consider a distance learning PhD.

The first thing to look at when considering this step in your academic career is what is needed to accomplish it. A computer and reliable internet and the ability to use them efficiently are a must. If you are reading this chances are you are already pretty good at finding information on the internet. Other computer skills will come in handy too; a good word processor or office suite such as Open Office, which is free, is something that will be needed. Your computer and its peripherals, such as a printer, will be relied on heavily during this time.

The next step is to find a school that fits your needs and will help you meet your ultimate goal. Each school has its own way of doing things and their curriculum and teaching philosophies will mirror this. This can be an important consideration when evaluating your own personal learning style. The closer the fit the better your experience will be. It is also important to try and stay in the same program throughout because transferring to another college part way through can mean losing important credits that you may have to repeat.

There are two primary methods that distance learning PhD programs work. Again, your learning style will help you decide which works best for you.

The first is more of the traditional way of earning a degree. It uses existing course structures and teaching methods and adapts them to the online world. Most of the class work, assignments, and testing is done via the internet. You will also find a more structured class or course schedule when going this route and find that you may need to go to a local testing center for certain tests. There may also be a portion of the program that requires you to be on campus, normally as you approach graduation.

The other method is a more personalized approach where your professors and advisor work with you to create a degree path that fits your own goals. This method works well for professionals who are looking for a more specialized degree. It does mean working with a professor or professors who specialize in that area of study that will create a curriculum that fits those needs. This allows the student to theorize, learn and apply practical applications as they relate to their area in business and the workplace.

With today's busy lifestyle it is impractical for many people to attend a traditional on campus doctorate program. Fortunately many colleges and universities have come to understand this problem and have created distance learning PhD programs to help those who wish to advance their education to the highest level.
