Online College Degrees: Why They're Popular Among Baby Boomers

ByMinnie Jarmon

If you are a baby boomer, you know that once upon a time, a college degree was a privilege and a stepping stone towards a guaranteed career with a great salary and benefits. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. Instead, while the majority of working-age people have some sort of college degree, not all of these folks are employed.

Due to the fact that a degree in a single field is so common nowadays, whether one is employed or not, many people are considering going back to school for additional areas of study and degrees. But if you work a full-time job, or are otherwise unable to travel to and from a school several times a week, then what are your options?

You could go to school once a week, and very slowly work towards a degree. Some people prefer this option due to the enrichment and stimulation of a classroom environment. But not everyone thrives on this, and many people will panic at the idea of needing to make time for this. Or you could take your classes online!

Faster connection speeds, a greater reliance upon the internet for information, and better internet-targeted marketing and sales has driven colleges and universities worldwide to offer classes online. At one time, there were universities that solely offered online classes, but now there are many schools that offer both in-person classroom learning experiences and online courses. Some schools even offer a combination of the two, with the majority of classes taking place online.

Online classes follow different formats- some consist of online forums that require "attendance" at a particular time, while others present different material each week and the individual students are expected to study and follow up on it during their own time. Whether the teacher expects the students to attend an in-person class as well often dictates the type of format. If one has questions or issues with content in the course materials, then the teacher is an email or even a phone call away. The flexibility of the time frame allowed by online classes work very well with the busy schedules of people who work full-time, particularly those who have families. Imagine sitting at home in the living room, your laptop open to your weekly online class, and your family sitting by you. You are furthering your education and keeping your resume and skills rich, while not taking a moment away from your busy schedule.
