The Ins and Outs of Security Training Courses

Security guards, or personnel who have received specialized security training courses, are commonplace in different parts of the world. These highly trained professionals provide security for people where regular law enforcement and military personnel cannot, and therefore work a very dangerous yet necessary occupation. They may be in charge of protecting the people in a certain place or they may be tasked with guarding an establishment. Whatever their assignment, you can depend on these professionals for protection when conventional law enforcement and military personnel aren't around.

Security training

An individual, before he or she attains the rank of a professional, must learn and pass specialized tests and courses. Just look at law enforcement and military personnel: a soldier has to go through boot camp first, while a policeman has to graduate from a police academy before wearing a badge. Similarly, an individual has to go through security training first before he can be called a prevention guard.

For anyone interested in becoming a prevention guard, there are many different security companies out there that provide specialized training courses. Security training gives the individual the necessary preparation needed to handle the job. In this case, receiving proper training can mean the difference between life and death.

Types of security companies

There are certain types of security agencies or companies where an individual can get the necessary security training courses from.

In-House/Proprietary - Security personnel referred to here are directly employed or work under the same establishment or people they are hired to protect. Security guards working for shopping malls and museums fall under these categories.

Contract/Contractual - Contractual prevention personnel work for a security company or organization that employs many security prevention guards who are then assigned to the different locations the company was assigned to protect.

Public Security - These personnel are also called security police. These types of security personnel are usually employed by a government organization or agency and are tasked with protecting its assets, whether they are personnel or property.

When an individual is planning on becoming a security guard, there are also other points he or she has to consider apart from the type of security agency he or she wishes to join. The laws and regulations that govern the organizations and individuals employed as security guards vary from nation to nation, from state to state. It is important that any aspiring security guard is made aware of the differences and the specific guidelines he or she must abide by in becoming a security guard and carrying out their assigned duties.

Hazards

There are hazards in being a security guard, as there are with any other profession. Unlike other typical jobs, however, a security guard is specifically trained to tackle dangerous situations head on and not avoid them. With this in mind, there are many hazards security professionals face on a day to day basis. Along with the usual physical harm that might come to them in the line of duty, there is also the psychological trauma they may experience, long hours at work, boredom, and many more.

Types of Online Courses for Getting Degrees Online

Online Courses are available at all levels of education.

There are  three basic formats of Online Courses involved in degrees online. Independent study or correspondence courses, synchronous courses and asynchronous courses are all offered as online classes. There are also several combinations of these. It is necessary to determine what is your preferred learning style and then locate online classes that suit your preference.

Independent Study or Correspondence Courses

Independent study or correspondence courses are not formal classes, but rather  are course materials that are available to students enrolled in Online Courses, via print or online. After signing-up and submitting payment, the course material is sent one of two ways. One method would be by delivering through postal mail or email, while an alternate method would allow the students to receive password- protected access  to the materials online. In such courses, the work is completed and returned to the professor in the same manner in which the course material was delivered.

Students will have a specified period in which to complete all course work. sometimes this may be for  three to six months or even up to a year. Some professors  may require that only one assignment be submitted at a time, while others may require that all work be completed and sent all at once.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to this format.

UK Paralegal Courses

UK Paralegals are an unregulated body of professionals but with the advent of several businesses all trying to introduce separate 'standards' it is becoming a more popular career of choice. The Paralegal's role is to provide more cost effective operating costs to legal services under the supervision of Solicitors or Barristers. A degree is not necessary.

The Solicitors Act 1974 reserves certain legal activities for Solicitors and therefore Paralegals can only perform many of these activities under the supervision of Solicitors or Barristers.

Some unregulated legal activities such as appearing at Tribunals, County Court Small Claims, Trademark and Patents agents can be performed by Paralegals, unsupervised.

If, in the event that the UK government recognises the Profession of Paralegals as a third independent legal profession and gives them powers to work in those areas reserved for Solicitors, Paralegals will continue to work under supervision, except as mentioned, in those unregulated areas.

There are 2 ways to become Paralegals:

1. Having relevant legal work experience
2. Completing an appropriate Course.

Having your legal work experience recognised is not a route which is open to all. Working within a legal environment requires knowledge of legal procedures and Solicitors do not normally have the time nor the inclination to train someone on the job - this environment is far too busy. They prefer to employ someone who has already obtained legal knowledge.

Selecting an appropriate course is now becoming a minefield. How can you evaluate the most effective type of course to study? As a general rule, courses which cover Procedural Law and give a hands-on approach to procedures, form filling, research, interviewing and such practical knowledge are what solicitors value most.

In the UK, a law degree in itself, does not prepare you for the role of a Paralegal. Unless you are aiming to qualify as a Solicitor or Barrister, this is not necessary. Having a law degree will necessitate further legal qualification such as completing a Procedural Law Course or the Law Society's Legal Practice Course.

There are now several universities offering paralegal qualifications in addition to private and independent colleges and there should be a course to suit everyone. All aspects of legal studies can be undertaken eg. Immigration, Probate, Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Conveyancing, Litigation, Principles of English Law, Maritime Law, Human Rights, International and European Law and the list goes on.

There are also several 'levels' of qualifications being offered by different institutions and undertaking a course which gives an Introduction or an Overview is simply to test whether this is a career for you and should not be viewed as acquiring required level of competency.

Obtaining a legal qualification can be done by Distance Learning, Online or face-to-face with many institutions.
